Welcome, fellow film fans and casual moviegoers alike! As we step into 2026, it’s time to look back on 2025 and the films that left a lasting impression, even though the year wasn’t as packed with releases as I had hoped and I didn’t get to see as many as I would have liked. Last year I tried a video list, but this year I’m returning to my original article format to share my thoughts more naturally. From thrilling action to heartfelt dramas, 2025 delivered films that surprised, moved, and reminded me why I love cinema.
Before diving into my top ten, there are a couple of other releases that stood out enough to deserve special mention.
Honorable Mentions
Fantastic Four: First Steps

Coming in with almost no knowledge of the Fantastic Four, I was impressed by how the film showed why they’re A-tier heroes. Director Matt Shakman expertly handles the ensemble cast, and Michael Giacchino’s score perfectly complements the retro-futuristic visuals. While the plot is simple, the performances, family dynamics, and world-building make this a fun and engaging Marvel reintroduction.
The Life of Chuck

Mike Flanagan’s latest film features several cast members from Midnight Mass in entirely new roles. The movie is split in two halves: the first feels almost like an apocalyptic horror film, while the second recontextualizes everything into a deeply touching and life-affirming story about a man named Chuck and the world that shapes him.
Top Ten Movies of 2025
10. The Roses

This remake starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman is clever, funny, and well-acted, with a slow-burn exploration of marital problems that keeps you engaged. The story nods to its classic origins but is modernized with fresh ideas, and the supporting cast—Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Ncuti Gatwa—shines, particularly McKinnon. Despite a slightly slow pace, the ensemble and humor make it a memorable watch.
9. Avatar: Fire and Ash

The possible conclusion to James Cameron’s epic trilogy is a breathtaking cinematic experience, especially on the biggest screen. The film continues Cameron’s tradition of visual spectacle and emotional storytelling, with the first two acts particularly strong in action and heart. The third act feels a bit like a retread of The Way of Water’s finale, and if the trilogy had been released closer together, it could have been this generation’s Lord of the Rings.
8. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

This long-awaited finale ties together threads from across the franchise while delivering epic stunts and heightened emotional stakes. Ethan Hunt remains a legendary action hero, performing insane feats while committed to a goal only he fully understands. Some returning characters could have been used better, but the set pieces—including the plane and submarine sequences—are unforgettable, and the soundtrack complements the action perfectly.
7. F1

F1 is a thrilling, high-speed experience with solid acting, stunning visuals, and intense racing sequences. The story is straightforward, but Hans Zimmer’s score elevates every moment, making the film a pure entertainment powerhouse.
6. Predator: Badlands

Even as a casual fan, I found Badlands to be a unique and entertaining entry in the Predator franchise. The story flips the usual formula, with creatures hunting a Predator, and explores themes like leadership and positive masculinity. The chemistry between Dek and Thia works, the humor lands, and the effects are stellar, making it a standout action experience.
5. Weapons

Zach Creggor’s horror film is structured in chapters, each following a different character connected to a mysterious disappearance. Julia Garner and Josh Brolin lead the cast, with Cary Christopher delivering a particularly standout performance. The film balances tension, horror, and humor effectively, keeping the story engaging throughout.
4. Thunderbolts*

This team-up of misfit secret agents turned New Avengers is one of the MCU’s best ensemble pieces. Yelena takes center stage, supported by Walker, Alexei, and Ava, all of whom deliver memorable performances. Key moments, like the emotional finale to save Bob from the Void, are thrilling and heartfelt, and the team dynamic carries the film from start to finish.
3. Sinners

I wasn’t initially drawn to this movie, but it exceeded expectations with a strong cast led by Michael B. Jordan, Michael A. Jordan, and Miles Caton. Director Ryan Coogler blends tension, music, and culture to deliver a simple but powerful story. Standouts include Jack O’Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku. The epilogue recontextualizes the entire film in a haunting and memorable way, making this a must-watch that should appear on anyone’s top list—even if the Academy ignores it.
2. Superman

James Gunn’s Superman reboots the DCU with a fresh focus on heroism, kindness, and moral conviction. David Corenswet embodies Superman with warmth and depth, while Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is a standout villain. The Justice Gang, including Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific, and Isabella Merced’s Hawkgirl, brings energy and humor without requiring prior knowledge. The film balances action, emotional stakes, and clever humor, and it will fill you with hope in a dark time.
1. Wake Up Dead Man

Rian Johnson delivers his best work yet, blending a gripping mystery with themes of faith, morality, and politics. Josh O’Connor shines as Father Jud, creating a nuanced portrait of devotion and goodness, while Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc remains witty and observant, even when faced with profound questions of belief. The film expertly balances tension, humor, and emotion, with the scene featuring Louise guaranteed to bring tears. Experiencing it in the theater would have made it even more impactful. Every element, from the story to the performances, comes together perfectly, making this my number one pick of the year.
