Movie Review: Free Guy

Really fun and heartfelt movie. It’s kinda funny to me how some of the best video game movies aren’t the ones adapting a specific game. While the many trailers gave away a lot there was still a lot of fun to be had including several unexpectedly great references and cameos. Ryan Reynolds is hilarious as always in this Truman Show-esque film set in a video game world. The rest of the cast is also very good with Jodie Comer standing out as she basically carried the plot forward with the help of Reynolds and Joe Keery. Taika Waititi was a pretty over the top and wacky villain and he seemed to be having a lot of fun in the role but his character was pretty one dimensional and you can pretty much tell what he’s gonna be like the whole time from his first scene. The same goes for a lot of the characters as you can tell where they’re all gonna end up by the end of the movie from some of their early dialogue. I also appreciated that it only used references to other games and movies sparingly so it wasn’t an IP overload like Ready Player One (which is still liked) and they were well used, though I’m probably biased as the ones i noticed were from stuff I really like such as Halo and Star Wars. All that said, this movie was action packed, hilarious, had a lot of heart, all while reminding me of ther things I like such as Truman Show, Westworld, Mythic Quest, and more all while not making me think that I’d rather be watching those other pieces of media. Between this and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard earlier this year, Ryan Reynolds has cemented hinself as one of my favorite comedic actors. His charisma and comedic timing is unparalleled and he pretty much steals the show in anything he’s in especially when he’s the lead. Deadpool 3 can’t get made soon enough. Rating: 8/10
