Spoiler-Free Movie Review: Logan

Stand aside Marvel Studios, this is how you make a film. I know I’m putting this review out a bit late considering the film released in March but I still wanted to give my thoughts on this masterpiece of a film. As far as trilogies go, the Wolverine trilogy is the most sporadic of them all. X-men Origins: Wolverine is well regarded as one of the worst films in the franchise, tied with X-men The Last Stand, and rightfully so. The Wolverine is regarded better as it is a much better film but does kind of fall apart in the third act. Considering the director of The Wolverine stayed on to now direct Logan, I’d say it is worth anyone’s time to see that movie before seeing this one. There is one part that someone pointed out to me online that ties in strongly to a crucial scene in Logan.

With that said, what did I think of Logan? Easily one of the best superhero movies, if not films in general, that I have ever seen. This is really more of a character study than it is a superhero movie as the audience can really feel every emotion that the characters on-screen are feeling and every performance is Oscar-worthy. The main three members of the cast (Hugh Jackman as Logan, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Dafne Keen as Laura), all give some of the best performances of their careers. The young actress Dafne Keen was phenomenal especially given that this was her first feature-length film. What is great about this film is the chemistry between these three as well as all of the supporting characters, even the antagonists. Considering Logan is but the latest in the X-men film franchise, it is not that difficult do jump into it as a new viewer. Basically, if you’ve seen the first X-men movie, or really any that features Wolverine, then you should be fine seeing this. As much as I’m looking forward to some other superhero movies, this one will be the one long remembered as the one that raised the bar to the next level. Lastly, don’t show this to any children. This film is rated R for a reason.

Final Score: 10/10
