At what point should we know our future?
While this is a question you would often see on TV or in science fiction films, it is a question we can ask ourselves. As a college student, this is something we are expected to know within a year of starting college or even the end of high school. We need to know our future early on as we have to know what to study for a job we are expected to be in for the rest of our lives. It took me a while to decide on a major as I wanted to be sure about what I wanted to do so I wouldn’t have to change majors multiple times like some other people I know. I chose to go with Electronic Media Broadcasting as it will give me some flexibility in the future as, currently, I want to work in film but, who knows, I might change my mind at some point. This major will allow me to work in different areas of production such as television, radio, podcasting, etc. I don’t know what will happen in the future, but it is safe to prepare and have back-up plans. I think it is crazy to have to know what you want to do for the rest of your life in high school or early in your college career and trying to know so early leads to getting jobs you don’t enjoy or constant major changes in college that cause an unnecessarily extended university life. I hope once I get into the film industry after college I enjoy it enough and I can succeed so I don’t feel like I wasted my time in college and have to figure something else. It is always good to know, though, that others have this problem and no one really has it all figured out. No one really has the ability to check out the future to see how well we’re doing.
