Is Anything on the Internet Private?
Ever post something on Facebook you quickly regretted so you deleted it before anyone saw it? What if I told you it isn’t gone forever and someone can still access it? It probably wouldn’t be who you thought would be seeing it but people are still seeing it. Whenever we make a social media account we are basically signing up to allow government entities to see each and everything we post. Now, I know this isn’t really new information for a lot of people, but many still don’t see this as fact or just don’t care. So, the question is, should we care that many government agencies can see pretty much everything we do online?
I don’t have a clear answer for this that would sway anyone since this is a hotly debated topic, but I can give my stance on this issue. The only time this ever really gets to me is how this leads to very specific ad-targeting based on my search history. Something I should do more, now that I’m thinking about it, is consistently clear my browser history. Another way to help with this is just download an ad-blocking add-on for your browser of choice. This would really just help you not have to see the ads though. Overall, though, I don’t really care as it pertains to me but I know there are many bigger issues tied to this topic than who is seeing what I post to Twitter. I do value my privacy as much as the next guy but the point of social media is to put stuff online for people to see. At least where not really close to the privacy issues in Black Mirror. If we were anywhere close to even the more mild episodes, then I’d be much more terrified.
